Vivid Visions

At Antwerp Art, edition 2024 Eva Steynen Gallery presents a duo exhibition 'Vivid Visions' with paintings by Johannes Ulrich Kubiak(°1961, D) and sculptures by Nel Bonte (°1986, B), two artists that strongly represent the philosophy of the gallery. Each artist, in their own specific way, approaches the world with a visual thoroughness in their work.

The concept of ‘seeing’ is a dynamic relationship with the world. A vision is an experience of “seeing” – whether the act of looking, or the way we understand something complex. Seeing beyond the surface and conceiving the world around us. The selected works of  Bonte and Kubiak come together not only in their formal complementarity, but above all in their perception of what there is and the way things appear to them.

NEL BONTE

The work of Nel Bonte has a strong visual narrative, always with a gentle humour. The sculptures she presents at Art Antwerp come from the ‘WOLIBO‘ series, an ongoing project on the transformation of matter. These organic-like sculptures refer to the transformations of form and what occurs on the material surface. A process in which a clearly defined geometric form evolves into an amorphous geometric volume.

Nel Bonte (° 1986, Roeselare) holds a master in visual arts (KASK Antwerp). She exhibits since 2010 mainly in Belgium. Recent exhibitions include ‘Kamers van Zé’, Antwerp (B); ‘De Biennale van ideeën’, Menen (B); ‘Alle rechte lijnen zijn gebogen’, CC De Ververij, Ronse (B); ‘Composte’, Herzele (B); Contemporary Venice - Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello, Venice (IT); ‘Fuga‘s en pimpelmezen’, Museum Lucien De Gheus, Poperinge (B); Art on Paper, Brussel (B).

JOHANNES ULRICH KUBIAK

Johannes Ulrich Kubiak´s paintings and works on paper are playful and complex. They are revealing and concealing mysterious spheres through thousands of brushstrokes. Through structure and transparency, Kubiak develops a spaciousness, a fragmented surface that obtains pictorial depth due to the varying density of the colours. His new series of paintings starts from reminiscences of old cosmogonies, elements prior to the visible world and new perceptions.

The paintings are made lying down, based on pencil drawings that disappear during the process. He uses a minimum of colours, white, cyan, magenta and yellow that are mixed into intense shades of red, green, purple, brown or blue. In fields of colour, thousands of little streams seam to disrupt, creating new constellations.

J.U.Kubiak (°1961, Annaberg (D), works and lives in Antwerp) has exhibited in Germany, the U.S., Austria, Luxembourg, France and Belgium. His work is held in several private and institutional collections, including Deutsche Bank, Bundesbank, Kunstsammlung Sachsen and Berlinische Galerie.
