For its first participation in Drawing Now Paris, Eva Steynen Gallery presents Light in Between Lines, a dialogue between the works of Benoît Felix and Johannes Ulrich Kubiak.
The presentation emphasizes drawing as a living, expanded practice — where perception and materiality intersect, and the act of making itself becomes central to understanding the work.

Benoît Felix probes the boundary between drawing, image, and object, treating the line as both illusion and physical presence. Through cutting, lifting, and pinning, he releases drawings from the flat surface, granting them a sculptural presence that unfolds into space. His practice questions how we look, how a gesture becomes matter, and where body, language, and reality intersect. Installations, videos, and performances extend this enquiry, turning drawing into an expanded field of experience. Large spatial cut-outs and smaller, fragile works together reflect Felix’s ongoing exploration of what drawing can be today.

Benoît Felix explore la frontière entre dessin, image et objet, où la ligne devient à la fois illusion et présence physique. En découpant, soulevant et épinglant, il libère le dessin de la surface plane, lui donnant une dimension sculpturale qui s’étend dans l’espace. Sa pratique interroge notre manière de regarder, la façon dont un geste devient matière, et les intersections entre corps, langage et réalité. Installations, vidéos et performances prolongent cette recherche, faisant du dessin un champ d’expérience élargi. Grandes découpes spatiales et petites œuvres fragiles révèlent l’exploration continue de Felix sur les possibilités du dessin aujourd’hui.

In Johannes Ulrich Kubiak’s works on paper, forms and structures gradually unfold through colour, rhythm, and attentive temporality. Each piece begins with an underdrawing that establishes a subtle linear framework, over which translucent layers of tempera and pure pigments — often magenta, yellow, and cyan — are applied. Fine, cumulative brushstrokes make the colour vibrate, generating depth and movement while merging drawing, gesture, and material. Motifs appear and dissolve without resolving into fixed imagery, producing meditative chromatic fields where abstraction and inner movement resonate, inviting prolonged and attentive perception..

His paintings are held in major collections including Deutsche Bank, Bundesbank, Kunstsammlung Sachsen, and Berlinische Galerie.

Dans les œuvres sur papier de Johannes Ulrich Kubiak, les formes et structures se déploient progressivement à travers couleur, rythme et temporalité attentive. Chaque travail débute par un dessin sous-jacent qui établit une trame rythmique, sur laquelle se superposent des couches translucides de tempera et de pigments purs, souvent magenta, jaune et cyan. Les traits de pinceau fins et cumulés font vibrer la couleur, générant profondeur et mouvement, mêlant dessin, geste et matière. Les motifs apparaissent puis se dissolvent sans se fixer, laissant émerger des champs chromatiques méditatifs où abstraction et mouvement intérieur se répondent, invitant à une perception prolongée et attentive.

Ses peintures figurent dans des collections majeures, dont Deutsche Bank, Bundesbank, Kunstsammlung Sachsen et Berlinische Galerie.
